AIDC 2010: Mark, Manage, Mobility Chuck Evanhoe, chairman AIM North America Reprinted with permission from VSR—2nd Annual Review & Outlook
We are excited about AIDC (automatic identification and data collection) technology solutions going into 2010.
With the downturn in the economy, companies are looking for solutions to help them improve their bottom lines. I think AIDC technologies are really the way forward. When you need to improve your business processes, what better way to do that than to take human beings out of the cycle and improve not just the accuracy of the data, but the processes as well?
I think the theme you'll see coming out of the next 6 to 9 months will be "mark, manage and mobility". This concept is cross-vertical. It's not just focused on warehouse; it's not just focused on healthcare; it's not just focused on government. The principles of "mark, manage and mobility" apply to all industries and sectors. It defines how they can implement and use automatic identification and mobility solutions to improve their operations.
In marking, we're looking at product identification, asset management, part marking, item serialization, serialized item management -- the entire supply chain.
That brings us to the management track. That's asset management, logistics, in-transit visibility, MROs, recalls, warranty management and end-of-life disposal issues.
We're also focused on the mobile workforce. As more employers ask their employees to stay home when they are ill, they still need them to be productive -- and mobility is a key factor. It’s about accessing data at the point-of-use and pushing new applications, new features and new functions out to the mobile workforce efficiently.
We're also launching the cross-vertical AIM Expo in November 2010 to help companies learn more about AIDC and mobility solutions.
We believe 2010 will be a better year for the AIDC industry and the end users that implement these solutions.

AIM’s RFID Regulatory Database
Doing business in RFID? Need information regarding RFID, real time locating systems (RTLS), and wireless telecommunications regulations from around the work? The RFID Regulatory Database may be just for you. The RFID Regulatory Database is a continuously-maintained catalog of the radio regulatory requirements for radio frequency identification (RFID) for those nations in the world where RFID is or may be employed.
For each of the countries and each of the study frequencies, the database identifies:
the primary user of each the availability for RFID the maximum possible output power the required duty cycle the bandwidth permitted the channel spacing required other possible restrictions future plans for the frequency band as far as they are available for RFID, and where appropriate, RFDC and RLANs the primary and alternate contacts in each radio regulatory administration and we provide complete contact details along with a list of the appropriate regulatory documents. At the close of 2009, 115 countries are included in the database. This database is under continual update and revisions are distributed twice a year to the primary subscriber contact.
Frequencies included are:
50 - 140 kHz 7.4 - 8.8 MHz 13.56 MHz 315 MHz 433.92 MHz 862 - 928 MHz 2450 MHz 5850 MHz
